A physical volume in LVM can be any number of (consecutive) diskblocks such as physical disks, a RAID, partitions and even files. If several physical volumes are to be used within a volume group they should have the same physical extent. The default physical extent is 4MB but can range from 8kB up to 16GB (using powers of 2). Physical volumes can be assigned to a volume group to be subdivided into logical volumes.
