gif is more for cartoons and paintings and artwork of that sort. Jpeg is more for photographic realism which is generally what people are shooting for (npi) with screenshots. And both have licensing issues. png is similar to jpeg , probably better, and doesn't have issues. AFAIK. IMHO. ETC. :)

I don't know why you are discussing this here, but PNG is different from JPEG because JPEG is lossy and PNG is lossless. Lossy means that you lose quality when you compress something. Lossless means you don't. PNG is like a .tar.bz2 (or .zip) file but is made for pictures. GIF is also lossless, but it doesn't support as many colors as PNG and JPEG. That is why it's not good for photo realism.

Skyline, I assume this is the page that you are refereing to about me duplicating? I can't get the information from my previous edit to merge with the older edit... I'm not smoking anything! I swear! AaronPeterson 04:23, Apr 11, 2004 (EDT)

It was "merged" in a couple of days ago - check the link below

You'll see that it has been intergrated further since then - Skyline 09:44, Apr 11, 2004 (EDT)

How do we post screengrabs to the pages?

images cannot be uploaded to the LQ Wiki, but you can link to off site images. See http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/LQWiki:Wiki_markup#Pictures for more info. Note that you should follow the MoS and also use images somewhat sparingly, as some people are still stuck on dialup. Jeremy 20:51, Sep 7, 2004 (EDT)
K, thanks
