Talk:Useful Sites

This is nice stuff, but it steps on the toes of an already existing Freshmeat page (already referred to on the same page that links to this), breaks the consistency of that page (it's not an application category), and it introduces a couple of meta-problems.

If we're trying to include portals like this, we need to have a central portal section and link to that, not be tacking mini-portals all over the place. A flipside would be to not have portals at all. If someone is talking about an app and they link to the Freshmeat page, that may be sufficient. A page that refers to nothing but other links expands peoples' knowledge about Linux resources on the net but doesn't really expand their Linux knowledge directly at all, which I think is the purpose of the site. So offsite linking may need to always be relevant and embedded in other articles and articles devoted exclusively to links may not be necessary.

The second meta-problem is that there probably needs to be a Talk page for the site as a whole, rather than personal or article talk pages. These comments are inspired by this article but they aren't *about* this article so much as they are about the 'concept of the site as whole'. Maybe the article Talk under LQWiki:Talk_Pages could be used for this, or something like a LQWiki:Site_Talk_Page could be made?

Or is it just me? :)

Apparently it's just me. I still think this should be moved.

I think a "Useful Sites" type page makes sense, but it should not be linked off the Application page. When we find a better spot for it we can move the linkage. As far as talk about 'concept of the site as whole' there is also now a wiki mailing list: http://lists.linuxquestions.org/mailman/listinfo/lqwiki-list

Sounds good.

I tried to subscribe to that after you announced it but never got an email confirmation back. Should I try again - I don't know if doing so would register me twice or not doing so would register me none. :)

Please register for the mailing list again - there was a problem that has been corrected. Thanks.

Done. :)

I completely agree, it deserves a section all of its own, but I can't edit main page hence I placed the page here as it was the most relevant. An essential point is this list shouldn't be allowed to get too big. And as to only linking to a projects sourceforge/freshmeat page, that doesn't give a reader oppurtunity to find their own software which might better suit their needs, rather than the more generic recommended.
